The Kelowna RCMP had their hands full with several reports of youth allegedly committing assault, mischief and other offences, said a news release issued Tuesday morning.
The detachment started receiving several reports of “social disorder” Friday night, specifically in the 3000-block area of Lakeshore Road.
The most notable report was a violent attack on a female youth, which was reportedly captured on video and is now circulating on the internet, police said.
An investigation is ongoing but due to the sensitive nature, ages of the offenders and victim, not many details have been made available by the Kelowna RCMP.
However, KelownaNow is seeking out more details and will provide more information if and when it is made available.
“Police want to remind individuals that obtaining video evidence or forwarding it and posting it to the internet, when it is for the intended purpose of humiliation or degradation of someone else, is unacceptable,” said Sgt. Laura Pollock Kelowna/Central Okanagan RCMP.
“Any video capturing evidence of a criminal offence should be reported immediately to the police and not circulated publicly.”
Investigators said they continue to review what they have described as “very clear and detailed video” of the incident to identify all those involved, including witnesses, the primary aggressors and other alleged offenders.
In addition to the assault of the female youth, the RCMP say they believe several other incidents of violence may have happened this past weekend but went unreported.
Sgt. Pollock says the RCMP are asking anyone with information about the assault on Lakeshore Road and other incidents of assault or mischief to come forward.
Anyone who witnessed the assault of the young girl is encouraged to call the RCMP at (250) 762-3000 and refer to file number 2024-57168.
All other possible incidents of mischief or violence can also be reported by calling that number.
The Kelowna RCMP are also encouraging victims or witnesses of any assaults to reach out to community support services like the RCMP’s Victim Services, which can be reached at (250) 470-6252.
