Kelowna Ski Club’s inaugural Slide & Glide for KGH event raises over $50K

The initial fundraising goal for the Kelowna Ski Club’s first-ever Slide & Glide for KGH event was $20,000.

That goal was absolutely smashed, as the community helped the Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club raise more than $50,000 to date.

It will all go to the KGH Foundation to support a revolutionary, comprehensive advanced stroke care plan that will radically transform treatment for patients living in the BC’s southern Interior.

“Stroke is devastating and affects so many in our community – over 1,800 patients and families in our region last year,” says Bettina Muller, events and project manager at the KGH Foundation.

“We are so grateful to our friends at the Nordic Ski and Snoweshoe Club and couldn’t be more proud of their success. In the end, everyone wins.”

More than 100 participants challenged themselves with a new cross-country or snowshoe distance, while over 50 people created fundraising pages in support of the event.

All teams were working together to raise the much-needed funds to support the KGH Foundation’s Every Moment Matters campaign.

“We wanted to create something fun and safe during the pandemic that still encouraged people to go enjoy the outdoors and support a good cause,” said Lyle Nicholson, a director for the Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. It’s been a pleasure seeing a little friendly competition take place, and all for such a worthwhile cause!"

Nicholson added that the club was “deeply humbled” by the community’s incredible support.

After such a successful inaugural edition, the Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club is considering making Stride & Glide an annual event.

“Without the pandemic, we have the opportunity to really make it a thing,” said Nicholson.

“Think wrap up celebration with cider tastings, food & beverage stations, and a more unified in-person festivity! We look forward to seeing everyone again, striding, gliding and setting new goals!”

Keep an eye out for this event in a year’s time, as it has the potential to become a spring staple in the Central Okanagan!
