Kelowna Visitor Centre has celebrated Earth Day by announcing that it won a gold certification from Sustainable Tourism.
The centre said it was focused on making the building – which is located just by the lake off Queensway – as efficient as possible during construction.
In entering the process for Sustainable Tourism certification, Tourism Kelowna explained, they also began focusing on other aspects of sustainability.
That includes equality, waste prevention, energy efficiency, transportation, purchasing and more.
The centre intends to change its vehicle, too.
“This spring, we will build on our partnership program with Budget Car and Truck Rental by updating our Kelowna Explorer Vehicle (KEV) from a Transit Connect minivan to a more fuel-efficient Toyota Camry Hybrid,” Tourism Kelowna explained.
The centre is also planning to add solar panels soon with the intention of having them generate 10% of the building’s energy.
Its retail section is also now using several upcycled products.
