An overnight crash has sent one person to hospital and another to jail.
Emergency crews were called to Harvey Avenue and Banks Road around 2:15 a.m. today after receiving reports of a serious single vehicle crash.
According to reports, the eastbound red Chevrolet Avalanche struck a traffic light standard along the highway and sustained severe body damage.
“The extent of the intrusion of damage into the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle was so significant, that the civilian motorists who were first on scene were unable to observe a severely injured female, in the rear passenger compartment,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.
“Emergency crews were required to extricate the female who was rushed to hospital in critical condition.”
Investigators detected symptoms of alcohol impairment on the driver, who subsequently failed a breathalyzer test at the side of the road.
He was then transported back to the local RCMP detachment where he provided more samples of his breath in excess of the legal limit.
The 26-year-old Kelowna man driving the vehicle only sustained minor injuries and remains in police custody, facing a number of charges and driving prohibitions.
His female passenger remains in a medically induced coma in intensive care and her injuries are considered life threatening in nature.
If you witnessed this crash and have yet to talk to police, you’re asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
