Kelowna City Planners are recommending support for a rezoning application that would see a supportive housing project built on Wilkinson Street.
In late August, the city accepted an application submitted on behalf of NOW Canada Society, which seeks to rezone 2160 Wilkinson St to the MF3 – apartment housing rental only zone.
The proposed rezoning would facilitate the development of a four-storey building with around 29 rental units that would have on-site supports predominantly for women with children, a staff report says.
According to the developer’s application, 20% of the units will be “deep subsidy” units while 50% would be Rent Geared to Income (RGI) housing and the remaining 30% would be offered to people with low to moderate incomes.
City planners say the proposal aligns with the Official Community Plan (OCP) future land use designation.
They say it is also consistent with OCP policies that support low and medium density residential development and diverse housing tenures.
“Additionally, OCP policy encourages supportive housing developments to be located within the Core Area to be closer to employment, public transit, service and amenity options,” the staff report says.
The building would be operated by NOW Canada Society, who currently manages similar buildings on Cawston Avenue and Ethel Street.
Kelowna City Council will review this application during the Dec. 9 meeting.
