Kelowna property owners near creeks urged to prepare for potential flooding

Central Okanagan Emergency Operations (CORD) is urging property owners living near Kelowna creeks and streams to be proactive and prepare their properties for potential flooding.

However, properties along Okanagan Lake aren’t currently at risk of flooding and the lake is not a concern for CORD at this time.

The spring runoff is underway, as the higher elevation snowpack starts to melt to the valley bottom.

With the current warm weather and rain in the forecast, residents are asked to be alert and, more important, prepare for the potential of flooding.

Local government continues to monitor weather conditions, as well as creeks and stream across the region, and have even performed some proactive flood mitigation work.

BC Wildfire Service crews have assisted in placing flood protection measures at the following locations:

  • The lake up to Richter Street
  • Brookside Avenue through to Lindahl Street
  • Burne Avenue
  • Ethel Street to Gordon Drive

The next step for crews is to access certain private properties along Mill Creek to place protection measures.

To allow this to happen, a local state of emergency has been put in place specifically for Mill Creek.

Self-serve sand and sandbags are available for residents at a number of locations, which you can find on the CORD website.
