For a sixth straight year, Kelowna families are being challenged to take a bit of a break from the technology that can sometimes consume us.
The sixth annual Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week will take place from Jan. 26 until Feb. 1, beginning with a free family event at Parkinson Recreation Centre on the 26th.
Last year, more than 350 families attended the kick-off event, which leads into a week full of opportunities to increase the time families spend doing healthy, interactive activities.
The benefits of sharing ‘screen-free’ time is compelling so it’s no wonder that we see growth in attendance each year,” says Paul Zuurbier, one of the event’s organizers.
Sunday’s event will begin at 10 am and includes more than a dozen fun community booths, a bouncy castle, magic show, children’s band and several chances to win prizes.
Kids will also be given ‘activity passports’, which they’ll need to have stamped in order to win those prizes.
A recent study shows that off-screen time is very essential for developing life skills like self-regulation, creativity and much more.
Interior Savings CEO Kathy Conway says the goal of the week is to “empower families with knowledge and resources that will give children a strong foundation to support them through their lives.”
