(UPDATE: July 10th @ 5:35 p.m.)

KelownaNow has confirmed with Kelowna Fire Chief, Travis Whiting that the fire was caused by a roofer working alone. He was applying torch-on roofing.

July 9th, 4:00 p.m. - Massive fire at luxury complex still has fire department working on site

The Truswell fire is completely contained at this time and fire crews are working on an overhaul of the affected areas. Their priority today is minimizing the smoke in the area and trying to put all the hotspots out.

The Evacuation Order for Water’s Edge (65 units) at 3865 – 3885 Truswell Rd has been rescinded but residents are still unable to return to their property. Fire personnel and the strata council are currently working on giving residents access to their units so they can get personal items.

The Evacuation Order for Charles M Suites (11 units) at 559 Truswell Rd, Walnut Grove (37 units) at 549 Truswell Rd, Mission Shores (54 units) at 3880 Truswell Rd, and all single family homes on Truswell and Capozzi Roads have been lifted.

Fire personnel were able to hold the fire to one wing of Water’s Edge and were able to maintain the integrity of the rest of the building. At this point, there is some smoke and water damage in some of the units.

In Walnut Grove there were around nine units that were heavily impacted by the fire, but the rest of the units were completely intact and personnel is hoping to get people back into their units by Sunday night or Monday morning.

When the fire was at its peak yesterday, there were about 30 firefighters on the scene with all of their available apparatus. They were also able to get a boat into Mission Creek to help fight the fire on the Water's Edge building.

Three of the firefighters on the scene yesterday were sent to the hospital, two of which were due to heat exhaustion. The other crew member is still being treated for burns on his hands.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigators are on site interviewing and assessing the damage and are hoping to have more answers soon.
