Motionball annual Marathon of Sport set to return to City Park this fall

As the province settles into phase three of the restart plan, sporting events are also restarting.

Motionball Kelowna’s annual Marathon of Sport will be returning to City Park on Sept. 18.

Motionball is a non-profit organization that introduces volunteers and donors to the Special Olympics movement.

The ultimate goal of the event is to create more inclusive communities and support the Special Olympics Canada Foundation (SOCF).

Other goals include fundraising, bringing awareness to the Special Olympics and athletes while creating a space for people with and without intellectual disabilities to interact and build friendships.

The Marathon of Sport, presented by Kelowna Toyota, will welcome back young professionals and Special Olympic athletes for a day of action-packed, non-competitive sports.

Since 2002, motionball has raised $14 million for the SOCF.

Last year, the event was held virtually for the first time but raised $56,000 locally and a little over $1 million nationally in one day.

Teams can sign up and raise pledges, be joined by a Special Olympic athlete and take to the fields for a fun packed day of non-stop, low-contact sports.

Pledges are not just financial ones, supporters take the powerful pledge to do their part in ending the use of the R-word in everyday conversation and take a stand against bullying.

The organization will ensure that the event will align with local public health guidelines and the SOFC return-to-play guidelines.
