New plans submitted for townhouse project in Kelowna's Upper Mission neighbourhood

A Kelowna-based developer has submitted plans for a townhouse development in the Upper Mission area.

MQN Architects submitted a rezoning application in mid-August for another addition to The Ponds development.

They are looking to rezone 949 Hewetson Court from the large lot housing to the townhouse zone.

According to the design plans, there would be four single-family homes and 12 duplexes with 62 parking spots.

In January, plans for this property were submitted which would have seen 31 units built.

That application was sent to a public hearing in February, however, city council rejected the proposal.

During the public hearing, several members of the public voiced concerns about density, impacts of traffic and the impacts of blasting on the rocky hillside and how that would affect existing properties.

Earlier this year, staff recommended support for the proposal but only if the developers were successful in receiving a Natural Environment and Hazardous Condition Development Permit due to the environmentally sensitive area.

Ultimately, that proposal was rejected by a 6-2 vote.

This application has yet to be circulated around the city’s planning and development department. Once all the information is received and it is reviewed by staff, the proposal could be forwarded to council for another look.
