No criminal investigation into man on fire who caused bridge closure: Kelowna RCMP

There’s still plenty of mystery surrounding a brief closure of the William R. Bennett Bridge late Sunday afternoon.

The RCMP tells KelownaNow that officers responded to the bridge around 4:45 pm for an “individual in crisis who was reportedly on fire.”

According to Cpl. Michael Gauthier, witnesses provided assistance to the individual, who sustained “significant burns to their body.”

They were transported to Kelowna General Hospital for medical care.

Gauthier did not provide an update on the person’s condition, but said there is no ongoing criminal investigation into the incident at this time.

He also did not share any further details where they came from and what led to them being engulfed in flames, although witnesses reported that the person on fire was a man.

While Monday’s lengthy closure due to a bomb scare lasted more than 10 hours, the Bennett Bridge was shut down for less than an hour on Sunday.

Witnesses said the incident was cleared and traffic was moving again on the bridge by 5:30 pm.
