(UPDATE: Oct. 3 @ 3:20 pm) - The Kelowna RCMP says Evelyn Robertson will finally be provided with a proper resting place.
Police made a public appeal in late September in an attempt to track down any family members of the woman who died on Mar. 1, 2020.
The appeal came after her ashes were found in a bag inside an abandoned tent.
In an update provided this afternoon, the RCMP says it took less than a day for a close family member living in a different province to reach out to the detachment.
The family member has agreed to take Robertson's ashes and give her an appropriate send-off.
"Evelyn will finally be able to rest in peace," an RCMP statement said.
(Original story: Sept. 27 @ 2:40 pm) - The Kelowna RCMP are looking to return a bag of cremation ashes to the rightful family member after they were found in an abandoned tent.
According to the police, Evelyn Robertson’s ashes were found in what is believed to be a close family member’s tent. Police believe that person was or is experiencing homelessness.
The RCMP say they have followed “numerous avenues” to find her living relatives.
However, they have been unable to locate any family members that would be able to provide her a final resting place.
Evelyn was 93 years old when she passed away from natural causes on Mar. 1, 2020, a news release said.
For now, Evelyn's ashes remain safely stored at the Kelowna RCMP detachment while police continue to search for another family member or close friend.
“Officers are asking the public’s assistance in locating a family friend of Ms. Robertson so that she and her ashes can finally rest in peace,” police say in a news release.
If you are a family member, friend or know more about this case, the Kelowna RCMP ask that you give the detachment at (250) 762-3300 and refer to file number 2024-20211.
