“Several” Kelowna RCMP officers have been injured after subduing a man in Kelowna.
One of the officers was sent to hospital for medical treatment following the incident on Wednesday.
Police were responding to a call from the fire department and ambulance service who were attending to a call in the area of Glenmore Road and Watson Road at about 6 p.m.
Officers were told that a man in need of immediate medical care had been “acting irregularly” before fleeing on foot into heavy traffic.
He was apprehended by police but, while being given medical care by the roadside, he fled again – this time into a gated community.
It took “numerous” officers to detain the man, the RCMP said, who is alleged to have been “assaultive” towards police.
“Several of our Kelowna RCMP officers sustained minor injuries, while one of our regular members required further medical treatment in hospital,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.
“This incident serves as a reminder of how each and everyday police officers place themselves at risk to protect the communities they serve.”
