Small float plane crashes into Okanagan Lake during water landing

A small float plane crashed in Okanagan Lake near West Kelowna this afternoon.

It overturned during a water landing, Mounties said, injuring both occupants.

The 72-year-old pilot – a man from Alberta – and his 59-year-old passenger were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It happened at about 4:56 p.m. just off the shore of Sunnyside Road.

“The crash is not being considered criminal in nature at this time,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“As such, RCMP have since notified, and continue to support the Transportation Safety Board of Canada who have launched an investigation into the aviation incident.”

The aircraft has since been recovered from the water.

If you witnessed the crash and have not yet spoken to police, call the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
