Mayor Tom Dyas will be away from his post for an undetermined amount of time.
A release from the City of Kelowna this morning says the mayor sustained a vertebral artery dissection in his neck earlier this week.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a vertebral artery dissection is “a tear in one or more tissue layers that make up your vertebral artery.”
“Our thoughts are with Mayor Dyas as he takes the time needed to recover,” said City Manager Doug Gilchrist. “On behalf of council and the community, we wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return.”
While Dyas is recovering, Councillor Luke Stack will serve as Kelowna’s deputy mayor and take on his responsibilities at city hall and beyond.
Stack is currently serving his fifth term as a councillor after having first been elected in 2008.
“Councillor Stack has been a dedicated member of council for many years,” added the City’s release.
The City noted that no further details will be shared at this time out of respect for the mayor and his family.
