Suspect in custody after stolen car is involved in serious Kelowna crash

One man is in hospital and another is in custody after an early morning crash in Kelowna.

The accident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Leathead Road near Mcphee Street and ended up closing Leathead Road.

After investigating the scene, it appears as though a white Ford F150 pickup truck crossed the centre line and collided nearly head on with a red Mitsubishi Outlander.

Firefighters were needed to safely extract the driver of the Mitsubishi from his vehicle.

He was rushed to hospital with serious and potentially life threatening injuries.

The suspected driver of the Ford allegedly fled the scene on foot following the crash, but was tracked down by police.

“An area of containment was immediately established around the collision scene and Police Service Dog Ice, of the Kelowna RCMP Police Dog Section, was brought in to conduct a search,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“A suspect was taken into custody, after being tracked by the police canine into the fenced compound of a nearby commercial property.”

The investigation into the crash and what lead up to it is ongoing as the Ford had been reported stolen from the Shannon Lake area.

The owner of the vehicle had been tracking the stolen truck’s position through GPS and police were patrolling for it when they happened upon the collision.

A portion of Leathead Road remains closed as specially trained investigators reconstruct and examine the crash scene.

If you witnessed the crash or have any other information that could help police, you’re asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
