This new JK program will nourish your child's first spark of discovery to cultivate a lifelong love of learning

Kelowna Christian School is introducing an innovative Junior Kindergarten program that's the perfect segue from preschool to kindergarten.

This new program, which begins in September 2021, will feature a variety of play-based intentional activities as well as play that enhances gross and fine motor movement and control.

What else is music to parents' ears is that JK will continue to provide your child with a loving and nurturing Christian environment that fosters exploration, risk-taking in learning, socialization skills, and classes are more focused on numeracy and literacy learning along with an intentional integration into the “big school."

KCS is excited to offer and provide your children with an educational option that is a more hands-on learning experience in an updated outdoor nature space. As well, this provides children with more opportunities to engage in larger learning projects that can’t normally be completed in a day.

Throughout the week, your four-year-old will attend four enriching afternoon classes between 12:15 to 2:45 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This structure allows for a more in-depth look at concepts, themes and activities without the fatigue that can happen in an everyday program.

"Integration with our elementary school is key with our junior kindergarten group," said Lori Pratt, preschool teacher at Kelowna Christian School.

"Music class with our music specialist, library and literacy time with our librarian, chapel participation as well as gym, 'big buddies' and a focus on nature and gardening are just the beginning of this exciting new class. We will also be incorporating the same bible curriculum that is in our whole school to allow for a seamless transition into our kindergarten program."

The new 'big buddies' program connects JK students with older students to experience cross-curricular and cross-grade activities. Children participate in activities such as gym, chapel and worship time, as well as taking part in the elementary school’s Christmas music and drama productions.

It is the perfect way to nourish your child's first spark of discovery to cultivate a lifelong love of learning.

Why JK instead of a normal 4-year-old preschool?

This program is for those students who need more stimulation through learning and are ready for more independence with an additional day at school. Students who do well from routine will be able to integrate well into kindergarten by beginning this program.

This also gives them the opportunity to start and continue activities as the consecutive days of class help students continue projects and learning over multiple days rather than starting and stopping from breaks in attending class.
