VIDEO: Stolen truck used as battering ram in devastating Kelowna smash and grab

They were days away from opening a second location, and now this.

Around 4:20 am today, a thief in a stolen flatbed truck bashed his way into the store and the results were devastating.

The owners of Players Choice Sports Cards and Collectables have only begun to tally up the damage.

The attack on their store was all recorded by video cameras inside and outside the store.

The culprit took one run at it and it wasn't enough.

On the second effort, the flatbed portion of the stolen truck smashes all the way in.

"It came all the way through and hit all the showcases," said Katie Jenion who owns and operates the store with her husband Jason Wobshall.

The debris left behind looks like it was the scene of a bombing.

"It's tough 'cause this is our family business, Our son works here, my sister-in-law works here," said a tearful Jenion.

"We put everything into our business so for someone to just smash it, it's really sad."

And it's not the first time they have suffered something like this.

"We've been around for 20 years now and we've dealt with it a few times," noted Wobshall.

"A couple of years ago downtown we had a really bad one," he continued. "You just know it's going to come and you just try to slow them down the best you can."

The front of the store was reinforced, but it was no match for a determined criminal armed with a flatbed.

The culprit has yet to be identified, but the family is hoping that by sharing the video, someone can help.

"The RCMP was awesome this time," Wobshall said,

"They were on-site within two or three minutes. They just missed each other, but it sucks."

He said the frequency of break-ins continues to get worse.

"I don't know, as business people, what we can do to protect our property anymore. It's getting pretty bad."

On the bright side, lots of people have been doing their part to help them put the pieces back together.

"We've got lots of great family and friends and they help us out so much," said Wobshall.

The RCMP believe the thief abandoned the stolen truck and made a getaway in a separate vehicle, a white pickup truck that was parked across the street during the break-in.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kelowna RCMP (ref. # 2025-3377)

They are hoping to have the store open for business again in two or three days.
