VIDEO: Kelowna's newest cannabis shop promises a local feel

While many of us are still getting used to the idea of marijuana being legal, the number of licensed retail stores just keeps increasing.

Kelowna now has 10 of them.

The latest is Kelo Cannabis which just opened on Clement Avenue.

The new store can be found in the same business complex as craft breweries including The Welton Arms, The Office and Unleashed.

At Kelo, they believe the City of Kelowna has struck the right balance by allowing a good number of shops while ensuring that they are not (generally) permitted within 500 metres of one another.

"I would say we're doing pretty good, right now. I think it's pretty sustainable," said manager Max Whalen. "Especially with all this growth we're seeing in the downtown core."

The company likes being close to those craft breweries.

"We're trying to be Kelowna's cannabis brand," said Whalen. "And fit into the craft cannabis space."

He said that as a private, independently operated store they have more flexibility in what they choose to put on the shelves.

"We're listening to what our customers want and providing the products and service that they ask for," explained Whalen.

There's a rule in the store that if any product is recommended by three separate customers, they will order it in.

"The majority of our products are grown out here on the west coast," he explained. "We also try to carry a ton of brands that are local here in the Okanagan."

The Clement Avenue location is outside of the core of Kelowna's downtown, but for many people who live in the area, it couldn't be more convenient with an estimated 16,000 people within a square kilometre of the location.

"While it's not in the downtown core, this is in the cultural district, so it's one of the areas we see really exploding right now," he added. "With both residential and businesses.

Kelo is open daily until 11 pm.
