VIDEO: Krafty Kitchen calling it quits after 10 years
A fixture in Kelowna's downtown restaurant scene is preparing to close.
Krafty Kitchen and Bar on the 200 Block of Lawrence Avenue is up for sale.
"My long-term goals just aren't aligned with the demands of a small business," said owner and chef Chris Shaften.
"I want to focus on my private cheffing and catering."
His decision comes at a time when businesses that count on tourism have been going through some lean times.
"As costs increase and things become more competitive and more difficult financially for businesses of all kinds," he said, "the pressure goes up."
The locally-focussed restaurant is built around its kitchen, with the food preparation area open to the dining room area.
It's a popular place, but the number of restaurants in and around the downtown has increased while tourism visits have declined.
Shaften makes the business work by putting in long hours
"I want to start a family," he said. "I can't rationally come to the conclusion where I can do both things and do them well."
Still, he believes the future looks good for the location.
"This area is up and coming, two huge condo buildings going in behind us," he said.
And a luxury hotel is on the way across the street.
"For the right buyer or buyers, this is going to be an amazing location."
Shaften is also selling the nearby Orchard Room which closed its doors about six months ago and is also up for sale.
