UPDATE: Rutland stand-off ends with arrest after man allegedly stabbed homeowner and jacked car

(UPDATE @ 10 p.m.): The RCMP has revealed more details about the stand-off in Rutland on Monday evening.

The 40-year-old Kelowna man they arrested was wanted by police after allegedly stabbing a homeowner in Arab Road who confronted him at about 4:18 p.m. The homeowner was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The arrested man is then accused by Mounties of stealing a car from a woman – who was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries – before fleeing.

“Kelowna RCMP front line officers spotted the stolen vehicle and, with public safety in mind, engaged in attempts to stop the vehicle,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“The suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle after it collided with a fire hydrant on Bryden Road near Highway 33. Officers chased the suspect on foot, who ran into and barricaded himself inside an empty nearby home.”‎

The scene was attended by the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

(UPDATE @ 9:45 p.m.)

A KelownaNow reporter spoke with a neighbour who confirms a man has been taken away in handcuffs. Officers are now departing the scene. KelownaNow will update the story when more details come in.
