Kamloops native Greg Stewart has been selected as a board of director with AthletesCAN, which is the association of Canada's national team athletes.
Stewart was elected to a three-year term on the board, along with Chris de Sousa Costa and Cynthia Appiah. The three join Andrea Prosk, Neville Wright, Camille Berube, Bo Hedges and Allison Forsyth that makes up the board of directors.
"We are excited to welcome Chris, Greg and Cynthia to the AthletesCAN Board," said Erin Willson, the AthletesCAN president. "Each of them brings terrific experience in representing the athlete voice within their respective sports and we look forward to working together with them over the coming year."
Stewart is a multiport athlete, competing in the shot put and sitting volleyball teams for the Canadian Paralympic program. Born missing the lower part of his left arm, Stewart went to TRU for post-secondary. While he was there, the 7 ft 2 in, 350 pound centre played five seasons with the Wolfpack basketball team, winning back-to-back Canada West defensive player of the year awards. He finished his career with a TRU record 1,024 points, an achievement that was only eclipsed recently.
After his university career, Stewart continued his athletic career, competing for Team Canada in the shot put and the sitting volleyball team.
Stewart competed in three Para Pan American Games, winning a bronze medal in 2007 and 2011 with the sitting volleyball team. In 2019, he won a silver in the shot put. That performance helped him qualify and compete at his first Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020, where he threw a record 16.75 metres to win the gold.
Off the field, Stewart works in the import/export metal recycling industry.
Congratulations Stewart!
