Victoria Shamrocks forward Larson Sundown recorded four points on two goals and two assists to lead his team to a 12-8 victory over the Nanaimo Timbermen on Friday.
The win marks the third straight victory for the ‘Rocks who now hold a firm grip on first place in the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) standings with a 6-1 record.
Goaltender Pete Dubenski was another key contributor in the win, being named the game’s first star after recording 33 saves on 41 shots.
Forward Evan Messenger was the top performer for Nanaimo in the loss, recording three points on a pair of goals and an assist.
The game remained in Victoria’s control from the opening draw as they took a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes. The Timbermen would respond by tying it at 2-2 midway through the first, however that is as close as they would get as the Shamrocks would catch fire in the second and take a 9-6 lead into the final frame.
They would then add three more in the third while holding off a late comeback bid by Nanaimo on their way to sealing the 12-8 victory.
The Shamrocks will now make their way up-Island for a rematch with the Timbermen this Thursday night (June 30th) at Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo, where the game is set to begin at 7:30pm.
