2 swastikas found in Nanaimo, police searching for suspect

The RCMP are investigating after two swastikas appeared in Nanaimo.

According to police, sometime overnight on October 14, 2021, a large swastika was painted in red paint on the front window of a business in central Nanaimo.

When employees of the business arrived for work in the morning, they found the image on one of their front windows.

The business immediately reported it to the police, and after taking a picture and ensuring the police saw it, they started removing it.

Later that day, the business notified the investigator that their security cameras were able to obtain an image of a person who is alleged to have painted the swastika on the building.

This person is possibly female and has distinctive bright orange hair.

The individual was wearing a blue puffy jacket and white pants. A yellow backpack was seen lying on the ground next to where the suspect was standing.

Police added that there was a possibly related incident the day before.

Another swastika was found drawn in cement in the vicinity of Cameron Island. No suspect has been identified in that incident.

“Because of what these images represent, we will not be showing the images to the public,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

If you have information on the identity of the person shown in the attached photo, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2021-38490.
