On Friday afternoon, new Kelowna restaurant MontREAL foods (MTL) celebrated its grand opening with live music, beer tastings and some delicious specials from the Montreal-inspired menu.
Located opposite the Landmark buildings on Kirschner Road, MTL is a classic scratch diner and a love letter to Montreal. The menu is inspired by Quebecois classics but with Chef Morazain's unique twists. From the fresh-cut fries to the broths and gravies, most things there are made from scratch with a large focus on gluten-free and vegan options. Morazain seeks to marry Okanagan produce and lifestyle with his Quebecois background and upbringing.
Prior to opening Morazain was the Culinary Director for UBCO Food Services for the past seven years. It's been a busy time for Morazain as the restaurant was purchased eight weeks ago and four of those weeks they have been open for business.
"I actually have a futon hidden upstairs, I live in Lake Country and after I put in an 18-hour day all I want to do is sleep.," said Morazain.
Jazz musician, Neville Bowman played during breakfast, before Maxine DeHart from the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce came to cut the ribbon. Following the ribbon ceremony, there was a beer tasting brought by Bad Tattoo Brewery accompanied by some MTL food samples.
With summer approaching, this restaurant offers a large patio with a misting system. They will also have barista style coffee, chilled wine and craft beers on tap making this an ideal place to take in the Okanagan sunshine while avoiding the heat.
MTL is open weekdays 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., and weekends 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. They serve breakfast and lunch all day and they also host weekend brunch. "When I see people leaving the restaurant, I always like to ask how it was," said building manager, Ron Kupser. "And every time they say, 'It was good... No, it was fantastic!'"
If you love the idea of fusion food made from scratch with locally grown ingredients, you will love MTL.
