Poetry enthusiasts are in for an extra special treat this month.
An evening of beautifully blended sentences and some seriously bougie burlesque will take over the Habitat on March 11th.
Curated by local poet Skylah Ginette, The Poetry Burlesque aims to inspire equally as much as it does to entertain.
“I’m motivated by the idea that this can be a movement to empower people by allowing for the freedom to express sexually inspired energy through creation and performance art,” said Ginette.
“We just provide a safe, inspiring space and I am constantly surprised at what surfaces on stage!”
The Poetry Burlesque theme brings a variety of presentations to the stage, with some poets presenting rather sultry pieces and others simply making people laugh about the absurdities of love.
Local musicians and visual artists are involved with the event, which simultaneously evokes the time honoured tradition of burlesque with the creative spontaneity of slam poetry.
“I wanted to take poetry out of the confines of coffee shops and colleges because those places are so safe and expected,” explained Ginette.
“The desire is to make poetry more attractive to the public, I thought to introduce a looser atmosphere with a bar and the idea of sex appeal. After all, what's more exciting and relatable than sex?”
If you’re on the fence about attending such a unique event, rest assured a common reaction from attendees is that the event is far better experienced than explained.
