An 8.5 km stretch of the Okanagan Rail Trail is about to close for erosion mitigation work

The Regional District of North Okanagan is set to close a portion of the Okanagan Rail Trail to undergo its fall 2020 erosion mitigation project.

Works begins on Monday, Sept. 21, which means the popular trail will be closed between the 4 km and 12.5 km mark.

Part of the reason the trail between Vernon and Kelowna is so popular is that it runs alongside Kalamalka Lake and Wood Lake, but it’s also the reason this work needs to be done.

"These beautiful neighbours to the trails also cause erosion that eats into the width of the rail trail,” said a release from the RDNO.

“Every wave that touches the side of the path takes sand and materials with it, and over time, the pathway becomes narrower, and sloughs occur. Erosion is an ongoing threat to the longevity of the ORT.”

Mike Fox, GM of community services for the RDNO, said that the Kal/Crystal Waters Trail will be available as an alternate route to connect Coldstream to Lake Country during construction.

“We understand that this is a disruption to the users of the northern section of the rail trail," Fox added. "We will do our best to complete the work promptly."

Updates on the work will be posted on the RDNO website.
