Critteraid looking for cow cuddlers and more

If it's a New Year’s resolution of yours to give back when and where you can, Critteraid in Summerland wants your help!

The non-profit organization recently rescued three baby dairy calves from a farm in Abbotsford and is reaching out to surrounding communities to fill the role of “cow cuddlers.”

“We are very excited to have them home with us, but with that comes a lot more work,” said Animal Care Director, Jess Byer.

Though the oldest of the three babies is only a month old, it won’t be long until they are the size of a small car, making the caretaking duties that much larger.

“It is a lot of work and we really do need the help, it would be good for people to come out and get educated on what all goes into the care of an animal,” said Byer

Though the job description does indeed include a cuddle session or two, there are a few more responsibilities to look after including learning how to work in a pasture, cleaning up after the cows, taking them for walks and helping to socialize them.

Since their rescue, Byer said the three calves Dancer, Prancer and Vixen have really come out of their shells.

“They have just absolutely bloomed, we are so proud of them. They are eating well, love their outside time and to be nuzzled,”

“We just need people to teach them how to be proper and gentle, and how not to use their body weight in a way that can harm someone,” adds Byer.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to fill out the online application form or give Byer a call at 250-488-3226.

“We really encourage families to come out, it is a great way to spend a day and really make a difference — it is hard work but you’ll get out of it the best kind of love you’ve ever felt.”

Volunteers are welcome to drop-in when they have time, but the Critteraid team is hoping to add some committed individuals to the schedule.

“We really want the community to understand that we need some committed volunteers, If anyone can come in and get on a schedule that is really what we need.”

The organization also has 12 pigs, two alpacas and 100 cats that are looking for love, care and attention from calm and gentle individuals.

No previous experience is necessary, the team just asks that you come prepared with boots, and clothing you don’t mind getting dirty.
