UPDATE: Hundreds of shade trees to be planted around new Fintry campsites, BC Parks confirms

(UPDATE: Jan. 14 @ 1:05 pm) - Shade trees will be coming to the new camping area at Fintry Provincial Park.

BC Parks has confirmed to NowMedia that the process of planting around 400 "native plants and trees" around the 30 new campsites, which were formerly an agricultural field, has begun.

"While it takes years for trees to mature and provide shade, these sites are equipped with electricity to allow comfortable RV use without generators while the trees grow," the statement explained.

"This coupled with the other Fintry campground loops located within mature forested areas offer a variety of potential camping opportunities."

And while it will be a few years before the vegetation grows enough to provide meaningful shade, the planting work is expected to be completed by the May long weekend.

(Original story: Jan. 13 @ 3:50 pm) - There will be more provincial park campsites available in the Okanagan this year.

BC Parks announced today that there are 30 new campsites with power hookups for use at Fintry Provincial Park.

They will be available to book starting on Wednesday. With bookings able to be made four months in advance, May long weekend reservations can be made as early as this week.

According to BC Parks, additional camping upgrades have been made alongside the construction of the new sites.

That includes new flush toilet facilities, potable water taps and service centres with a dishwashing station.

BC Parks shared two pictures of the new sites in a social media post this morning, which left campers noticing one thing in particular.

There are no trees around the new sites, which has many fearing that it will be an unbearably hot place to camp during the hot Okanagan summer months.

KelownaNow has reached out to BC Parks for more information on whether trees will be planted in the new camping area and, if so, what the timeline for that process looks like.

This story will be updated with further details once BC Parks provides them.
