UPDATE: Driver seriously hurt after Hwy 97 collision

(UPDATE: Dec. 2 @ 5:02 am): A driver was taken to hospital with serious – but not life-threatening – injuries after Wednesday morning's crash along Hwy 97.

Police said they were called just before 8 am after the collision between a pick-up truck and a semi-trailer with a diesel tank in Kaleden.

They added: "Initial information at scene suggested a pick-up truck traveling south on Hwy 97, crossed the double solid line colliding with an on-coming semi-trailer.

"The pick-up truck sideswiped the semi-trailer's cab, which included a diesel fuel tank. This resulted in a diesel spill."

Mounties added that they do not think criminality is involved.

An investigation is ongoing with support from the BC Highway Patrol.

(UPDATE: Dec. 1 @ 11:15 am): Hwy 97 is now open to single-lane alternating traffic.

DriveBC warned motorists to watch for crews and expect delays.

(UPDATE: Dec. 1 @ 9:38 am): Mounties have explained that a pick-up truck and a truck carrying diesel collided earlier this morning, closing Hwy 97.

Fuel has spilled onto the road, the RCMP added, meaning it will be closed "for an extended period of time" while the scene is cleared and police investigate.

Police said the collision was "serious" but did not say whether anyone was hurt.

Witnesses are asked to call the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300.

To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

(Original story: Dec. 1 @ 8:29 am): Hwy 97 has been closed in both directions in Kaleden.

DriveBC said there has been a vehicle incident between Lakehill Road and Okanagan Game Farm Road.

Emergency vehicles are at the scene and an assessment is underway.

Delays are expected.
