Major upgrades coming to South Okanagan highway intersection

Major upgrades are coming to a Penticton intersection this fall.

BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) said a $7.3 million contract has been awarded to Twincon Enterprise to upgrade the intersection of Skaha Hills Drive and Highway 97.

Work is expected to begin in October and should be completed by next fall, a news release said.

The project will include extending the four-lane section of the highway, upgrading turning lanes, improving pedestrian access and enhancing storm drainage, the MoTI said.

“These upgrades not only enhance safety and efficiency, they also bring significant benefits to the community and the many visitors who travel through this beautiful region,” said Rob Fleming, minister of transportation and infrastructure.

Chief Greg Gabriel, Penticton Indian Band, said they have worked with the MoTI to ensure employment and band business opportunities are created through the project.

“I would like to acknowledge the time, dedication and collaborative efforts of all those involved in these much-needed highway safety upgrades,” Gabriel said.

During construction, one lane of traffic will be open in each direction on the highway.

People are told to watch for and obey signs and traffic-control personnel.
