More than 500 people have signed a petition asking the BC Government to install safety barriers on Hwy 97 between Summerland and Peachland
On Thursday, a collision along that exact stretch of highway claimed the life of one individual after a southbound vehicle lost control and crossed the centre line where it was hit by a transport truck.
"The road is steep, has sharp corners, and the slope of the road in the corners is low on the outside, making it dangerous especially in winter conditions," reads the petition started by Mick Harper.
"Drivers who go too fast or don't adjust their speed for road conditions often drift into oncoming traffic causing serious harm or death."
Several commenters on the petition page agree that the stretch of highway is dangerous, with one signee suggesting installing reflective lights along the centre land to combat the darkness would also increase safety.
With Thursday's closure lasting over two hours, commenters also lamented the disruption to commuters accidents cause along the only route between Penticton and Kelowna.
