The Osoyoos RCMP is searching for a 41-year-old Oliver man who went missing Monday night and presumably drowned in Osoyoos Lake.
Just after 8:30 pm, police responded to a 911 call of a man who had gone under the water and failed to resurface after trying to rescue his dog.
The missing man and his friend were stationary in the middle of Osoyoos Lake in a surf boat while the man was playing fetch with his dogs.
While playing, one of the dogs appeared distressed and the man swam out to help it.
The man and his dog separated from the boat due to the wind and his friend witnessed the dog climb on the man’s back, weighing him down.
“Tragically it appears the man lost his life, saving that of his dogs,” states a release from the Osoyoos RCMP.
Mounties along with civilians, friends and the assistance of Osoyoos Fire Rescue continued the search for several hours on July 26, 2022.
Sadly the man has not yet been located and this has now become a recovery mission.
“The RCMP underwater recovery team is being mobilized and plan to arrive to Osoyoos early next week,” says the Osoyoos RCMP.
The South Okanagan detachment expresses its deepest condolences to the missing man’s family and friends during this most difficult time.
