RDCO free tire collection returns today

Grab those loose tires hanging around your property and bring them down to Okanagan College as the Regional District of Central Okanagan will take them off your hands for free.

The RDCO’s annual tire collection event is back and there is no limit to the number of tires individuals can drop off.

“It only takes a few centimetres of water inside old tires on your property to provide the perfect habitat for mosquito larvae,” said Curtis Fediuk, president of Duka Environmental Services Ltd.

“By dropping off any unwanted tires, you’ll reduce potential opportunities for mosquitoes to hatch.”

Tire collection will take place from 9 am to 1 pm at parking lot #17 on the Okanagan College campus in Kelowna on Sept. 7.

The RDCO is working alongside Duka Environmental Services Ltd. and Tire Stewardship BC to collect the tires.

“Tire Stewardship BC is a not-for-profit society that manages BC’s tire recycling program,” stated an announcement from the RDCO.

“Eco fees paid by consumers purchasing tires are used to pay for collecting, transporting and recycling scrap tires in environmentally responsible ways rather than having them take up space in landfills.”

The event is intended for residential cleanup only, but businesses that sell or generate tires can call 1-866-497-0281 to arrange a pickup.
