Rollover crash sends car into Okanagan Lake Monday night

Traffic was slowed on Hwy 97 through Peachland on Monday night after a car drove off the road and into Okanagan Lake.

Fortunately, and partially thanks to the heroism of a complete stranger, the man behind the wheel is recovering from minor injuries sustained in the accident.

The RCMP says it responded alongside paramedics and firefighters to the single-vehicle rollover crash on the southern edge of Peachland shortly after 6 pm.

The man was the lone occupant of the vehicle, police explained, and no criminality is expected.

According to a family member of the driver, another man jumped into the freezing water without hesitation to render assistance following the crash.

She shared that in a social media thread where others were lamenting the poor road conditions on that stretch of Hwy 97 on Monday night.

“Black ice the whole way through Peachland today,” a woman wrote. “(It) was a scary drive down to (Penticton) and back!”

The RCMP notes that a special towing company will need to be called in later today to remove the vehicle from the lake.
