South Okanagan Mounties take 10 impaired drivers off road over weekend

Mounties in the South Okanagan were busy over the weekend as they tried to keep the roads free of impaired drivers.

Between Friday and Sunday, officers with BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) Keremeos checked over 600 drivers for sobriety as part of British Columbia’s summer impaired driving campaign.

Their efforts produced the following results:

  • 10 immediate roadside prohibitions (IRP) for impaired driving.
  • 2 prohibited drivers taken off the road.
  • 1 driver who refused to provide a breath sample.

IRPs are the go-to tool to remove impaired drivers from the road in BC and range from three to 90 days, depending on blood alcohol concentration.

They are accompanied by vehicle impoundments as well.

Insp. Rob Nason, officer-in-charge for the BCHP’s Central Division, says his teams will continue to focus on impaired drivers through the summer season to keep our busy highways safe.

“Drinking and driving has devastating effects on all of us,” he said. “People who drive while impaired can lose their privilege to drive, they may be involved in collisions with life-altering outcomes and it can result in taking the lives of our friends, families and community members.”

The BCHP is urging people to not drive if they plan on drinking this summer, and instead find an alternative ride home like transit, cabs or a designated driver.
