Thousands without power around Kelowna after overnight windstorm

Thousands of homes in and around Kelowna are still without power after a series of outages last night caused by a storm.

Nearly 500 customers of FortisBC to the east of Kelowna, south of Hwy 33, have been without power since 11:30 pm after a tree fell on the line.

At about the same time last night, more than 2,000 customers lost power in the Big White area.

A separate outage is affecting over 200 customers north of Bankhead.

FortisBC said early this morning that a windstorm had caused the outages across its system.

“We recognize the inconvenience to our customers and appreciate their patience as we work to restore power safely and as quickly as possible,” the company explained.

BC Hydro logged outages at a similar time – around 11:30 pm – in West Kelowna, Coldstream and Vernon.

They affected more than 2,000 customers.

A KelownaNow reader, meanwhile, said she saw a police car crash into a downed tree during the storm last night.

She explained that a tree went down on Gordon Drive at about 11:10 pm.

Fifteen minutes later, an RCMP vehicle hit the tree.

“Doesn’t look like anyone was injured,” the reader added.

A tow truck later got the car out of the tangle.

There were also separate reports of trees and debris falling on homes across Kelowna.
