In response to the provincial natural gas shortage caused by the recent pipeline explosion near Prince George, the City of Penticton will be introducing measures at public facilities to do its part to help conserve natural gas.
The City issued a news release Tuesday saying certain measures will take effect immediately, including:
- Facilities heated by natural gas, including the South Okanagan Events Events Centre, Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, Penticton Community Centre, RCMP station, City Yards and Fire Hall No. 11 will have their heat reduced by 1.5 degrees.
- Infrared heaters in the spectator stands will be turned off at all arenas, hot water tank temperatures will be lowered and ice floods will be minimized as required.
- Pool temperatures will be reduced by approximately one degree.
- A two degree hot water reduction will be introduced at the SOEC as well as a five degree hot water reduction for Zamboni equipment.
“These measures support similar steps taken in other B.C. communities to lessen the demand on natural gas consumption as we head into the high demand winter season,” said recreation business supervisor Kelsey Johnson. “They will remain in place for the duration of the shortage.”
The City thanks residents and users of these facilities for their understanding and encourages them to reduce their own natural gas usage.
