Hatchery Brewing, now nearing the end of what ultimately will be a nine-month renovation cycle at the former site of The Mule Nightclub in downtown Penticton, announced today that it's changing its name.
Going forward, the hotly anticipated 286-seat craft brewery due to open by early June will be known as Slackwater Brewing. The change is effective immediately.
According to a press release dated today, "Hatchery Brewing was the namesake for Liam and Kelsey Peyton’s dream brewery, imagined back in 2014 through their adventures fishing on the rivers of BC, Washington and Oregon, paired with their love of great beer."
But, it said, due to a name dispute, "The brewery will cease to operate using Hatchery Brewing and instead will enter the market as Slackwater Brewing."
Co-founder and GM Liam Peyton is quoted as saying, "We really want a brand that echoes our love of the outdoors, most specifically time spent on the water with friends, family and good beer. Slackwater not only continues to reflect our love of fishing, but now also embodies more facets of our passions. The team is extremely excited to carry forward the new banner and ultimately, we know our time and resources are best spent ensuring we create the best beer and experience for our guests.”
"A name change at this point is disappointing, but we’re now back focused on opening our doors to welcome beer lovers far and wide into our beautiful new venue.”
We reached out to Peyton, who confirmed it's a done deal. "The liquor branch has been notified, our lawyers are dong the name change, new trademarking, we've changed our emails and website, and our social media."
Indeed, Peyton seemed most intent on gearing up to debut Slackwater's beverages at this weekend's important Fest of Ale craft brewery showcase at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.
"We've been working through the weekend on branding tweaks and making sure everything's ordered so we make a big impression at this weekend's Fest of Ale," he said.
Slackwater will unveil both its "What The Fog" IPA and French-style farmhouse ale "Serenity" at the event.
Slackwater Brewing is situated at 218 Martin St.
