Jog the Okanagan Lake waterfront Saturday afternoon in 2022 Santa Rec Run

So sang Chuck Berry way back in an early (1958) rock and roller that's still one of the better tunes to be pulled out of mothballs every Christmas.

But not only is it a great song, it's also a good credo to live by. Just because it's winter, you gotta keep those legs and limbs moving.

And this Saturday you can do just that, along with a bunch of other local folks, in the 12th annual Santa Rec Run.

The concept is simple. Throw on a Santa hat, or even better an ugly Christmas sweater, or for maximum effect a string of illuminated Christmas lights, and show up at the LocoLanding parking lot at 4:30 pm or so.

At 5 pm, everyone in attendance will commence to run/jog/walk/bike along the Okanagan Lake promenade to Marina Way Beach (adjacent to the Penticton Yacht Club) and back again.

Along the way, they'll encounter copious seasonal decorations and at the turnaround, a spot to grab a hot chocolate. They'll get another hot chocolate at the end too.

It's $15 for kids, $20 for adults, and $50 for an entire family to enter the wacky event, and all proceeds go to the not-for-profit Youth Outdoor Recreation Society.

Co-organizer Lyndie Hill of local adventuring company Hoodoo Adventures is happy to see the event back in full force after an outright cancelation in 2020 and an overriding sense of caution in 2021.

"It gets people out, gives them something to look forward to," she said. "It's not a huge commitment, and you can grab hot chocolates along the way and get some fresh air at a time of year when people need it."

One more thing. Decorations from the event and from recent events Hoodoo has participated in (like last weekend's Downtown Light Up) will be available, by donation, at the finish line.
