Penticton Channel clean up takes place Sunday

Many tourists, along with residents, enjoy floating the Penticton Channel during the summer months.

Now, it’s up to local residents to help preserve the channel for future generations to enjoy.

JCI Penticton, Royal LePage Locations West Realty, Coyote Cruises and K’ul Group are spearheading the annual Community River Channel Clean Up, set to take place Sunday, Oct. 18 from 1 to 4 pm.

“Royal LePage is excited to be part of the Community River Channel Clean Up because we are proud to call Penticton home and help the community in any way we can,” said realtor Nicole Courtney.

The Community River Channel Clean Up is an organized effort to remove garbage and unwanted items from along the river channel and channel parkway.

“This year we saw a 50% increase in the number of channel floaters and over 80% of floaters are non-Coyote customers. The sheer amount of garbage left from all floaters is overwhelming during the season” said Coyote Cruises partner Diana Stirling. “It’s imperative we all work together to keep the channel waters and land clean. We greatly appreciate JCI taking the lead, with other community groups and businesses, to establish this as an annual community project.”

Penticton Jaycees have a long history of revitalizing the river channel through clean up events and the installation of the concrete stairs for public access into the river.

Volunteers are needed for socially distanced shifts to help collect garbage at the following times: 1 pm, 1:45 pm, and 2:30 pm.

There will be three check-in stations along the route to help get volunteers set up on their specific section of the channel.

All volunteers will be entered into a draw for gift cards from local businesses.
