Penticton city council was approached with the idea of an outdoor skating rink from Activate Penticton Society back in 2019.
In its two year planning process a considerable amount of work went into developing this project.
Activate Penticton projected two different price points that would be entirely paid for by the society, the first predicting a base price of $438,000 to construct the ice surface pad. The second being a long-term projection of approximately $1,045,505 that would lead to the realization of the entire vision, which would mean future fundraising efforts led by the society.
"At this point it's a go, we are hoping to get some more donations and support from the local community but we have reached funding goals to have the rink operational this year,” says Activate Penticton President, Drew Barnes. “The additional funding will just make the amenity space that much more special, such as the addition of boards and glass, fire pit, more landscaping and eating areas."
Infrastructure upgrades to the rink's construction will be provided by the City, and will give $200,000 from the City’s 2021 Financial Plan Capital.
Long term responsibilities of the rink will be divided up, as the city will be responsible for snow removal in the neighbouring parking lot, and the maintenance of land around the rink. While Activate Penticton Society will be responsible for ongoing operating costs that include maintenance and snow clearing on the ice.
The planned 37m by 15m outdoor rink is set to open in December and will be located on 107 Main St. adjacent to City Hall, on a city owned parking lot.
