The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another popular Okanagan event.
The Rotary Club of Penticton has made the difficult decision to cancel Ribfest, which was to take place Sept.18-20 at Skaha Lake Park.
“We have spent weeks looking at various scenarios including a drive-thru event,” said event co-chair Barb Hoolaeff. “Due to the logistics of travel for our ribbers, combined with safety issues for the community and our volunteers, we feel we are making the right decision to cancel this year’s event and start planning next season.”
Penticton Rotary Ribfest was launched in 2015 and has raised over $220,000, money which has gone directly back into the community.
“One of the main reasons for Ribfest is to raise much-needed funds for programs in our community,” said Ribfest co-chair and current Rotary Club of Penticton president Sandra Krauer. “The need is still great. The Rotary Club of Penticton is looking at ways we can safely continue to fundraise so we can provide support to important programs, projects and groups moving forward.”
The Ribfest committee has reached out to all partners, sponsors, volunteers, entertainers and vendors to make them aware of the cancellation. The Rotary Club says they have received a positive response for the decision.
No date has been set for the 2021 Ribfest event.
