The Penticton Vees announced Wednesday the launch of a new community initiative called the Community Heroes program.
In a news release, the local Junior A hockey club announced the initiative will see a different local charity honoured at each Vees’ home game during the 2018-19 British Columbia Hockey League regular season.
Each charity will be presented with a cheque for $1,000, meaning the Vees’ organization will be handing out a total of $28,000 over the season.
“Launching Community Heroes is a very important project for us,” said Vees’ director of corporate partnerships David Michaud. “When we reached over 3,000 fans per game last season, we knew we had to find a way to say thank you to the community for supporting us the way they do.
“This will give us a chance to recognize 28 amazing groups that do great work in our community. Even more special than the $1,000, we think the chance for Vees Nation to recognize the great work these organizations do will speak volumes. We hope to hear lots of applause and cowbells when each of these organizations are honoured.”
Any registered charity is able to apply to be a Community Hero, and can do so on the Vees’ website under the "In The Community" tab.
Recipients will be recognized in the South Okanagan Event Centre during the second period of each game and representatives from each organization will be invited to join members from the Vees' organization in the Gateway Casino Community Zone.
