RCMP officers in Penticton successfully apprehended the driver of stolen truck after deploying spike strip on Tuesday.
Around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Penticton RCMP were alerted to a sighting of a stolen pickup truck traveling south toward Penticton from Summerland.
Plain clothes investigators observed the truck traveling into Penticton near the Red Wing subdivision at Hwy. 97 and attempted to use spike strips.
The driver was able to avoid the officers and drive up into the West Bench area.
Officers, including those assisting from the general investigative sections, targeted enforcement, and police service dog units, subsequently located the vehicle traveling onto the Penticton Indian Band lands.
Officers deployed another set of spike strips, which was successful in deflating the truck’s tires.
“Due to the truck being built to withstand tough driving conditions, the driver was able to continue driving, at slow speeds, up Green Mountain Road,” said Const. James Grandy, media relations officer for the local RCMP. “After a few kilometres, the driver wasn’t able to continue and our officer’s co-ordinated the safe apprehension of the 24 year old female driver."
The female driver was held in custody on charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possessing of a controlled substance, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
She was scheduled to appear in at the Penticton Courthouse for her first appearance on these charges today (Wednesday).
“The Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen regional detachment continues its commitment to safer homes and communities through solid teamwork and flexible co-ordination of resources,” said Grandy.
