PHOTOS: Does nature make us happy?

How would you describe your own connection with nature? Do those relationships with the natural world bring happiness to your life? How about your family? Are they engaged in Nature by day or fortnight, day and night?

In today’s society our time is spent on our electronic devices far more than it is being outside. Nature, never goes out of style.

No game can replace a walk with nature, not even virtual reality. The smell of the forest floor, the pine needles, the fresh crisp air. It’s a “happiness connection”, it’s home. Have you ever gone off the trail to smell the bark on a tree? Especially in the rain, it’s an experience. If you’ve hiked with me, you likely have.

The air is clean and fresh in November and a great time to get outside!.

Shortly after I started paddleboarding I realized that the “one with nature” quotes had far more meaning than just words.

Alone with my thoughts and the the sound of water under my board is my happy place. So much so, it became a year round sport for me.

And living in the Okanagan, we are blessed with weather that keeps us exploring outside all year long. Paddleboarding has given me a connection to nature in its purest form of simplicity.

Living a life of gratitude and connecting with nature gives me happiness and contentment.

Off the water, here is one of my favourite spots for a great hike. It’s Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park. It has over 400 hectares of parkland with easy to moderate hiking trails, stairs and rock climbing known as the Kelowna Crags. Eagles soar above and on a windy day, you can hear the wind hitting the crags. There are no other sounds, just nature.

If you are up for a challenge, there is a path that will lead you to the top where there are lounge chairs made from shale rocks and an unbelievable view.

There are a growing number of studies and campaigns putting forward evidence that a connection with nature makes us healthier and happier people, something that few of us nature lovers would argue with.

Closer by is Mundson Pond. Near the intersection of Benvoulin Road and KLO Road, a beautiful pond with loads of nature from turtles to coyotes to birds. It’s one of my favourite go to spots if I’m short on time.

Studies have shown that there is a scientifically significant increase in people’s health, happiness and behaviours with connection to nature.

By interacting with it, spending time in it, experiencing it and appreciating it, it’s no wonder we feel enlightened afterwards.

There is no WI-FI in nature but you will surely feel connected, and it feels awesome to get lost in the right direction.
