Political Discontent in Northern B.C. Village Leads to Threats

Mayor of the Village of McBride has sent out a release after receiving threatening phone calls that claimed village communications had been hacked.

The community of just under 600 people is located approximately 210 kilometres southeast of Prince George.

On Saturday, July 25th at approximately 4:25 p.m. Mayor Loranne Martin claims she received a threatening phone call from an anonymous person who used a distorted voice.

The caller claimed they had hacked community information systems and that further action would occur.

The mayor claims in recent months that bullying, defamation, and threats have become commonplace for Councillors and staff.

The mayor has asked residents to respect local government officials and their safety, stating “while criticism of any political entity is both lawful and welcome; there are lines that should not be crossed and we are now over that line.”

Mayor Martin stated the phone call was not an isolated incident and the RCMP is investigating the calls.
