Funding Will Help Grow Female Sport Across BC

Sports is all about staying fit and having fun.

The BC Provincial Government is hoping new funding will help encourage more girls and women across the province to take part in athletic programs. To help grow female sport across the province, more than $60,000 was given to 34 different groups, ranging in age from youth to seniors.

The latest funding was provided by ViaSport, a BC based agency that supports amateur sport across the province. While funding was targeted mostly at growing female sport and female athletes across British Columbia communities, a special focus was also placed on lesser known sports. The Vancouver Island Biathlon Club received almost $1,800, while the Penticton Pickleball Club received $2,000 in grant money.

Research shows that girls and women are underrepresented when it comes to participation and opportunity in sport; therefore, specialized grant funding can make all the difference in developing and sustaining a lifelong love of sport and physical activity,” said ViaSport CEO Sheila Bouman.

The funding can be used for everything from equipment to sports training, in hopes all athletes get equal opportunity to engage with sport in some capacity.
