Fires push two area evacuations near Fort St. John

The fire season appears to be in full swing in British Columbia as more communities near Fort St. John are being evacuated.

Both the Siphon Creek and Goodlow areas were given evacuation alerts on Sunday night due to fire threats.

On May 1, shortly after 7 p.m., people living near the Alberta border on Siphon Creek Road, Osborn Road, 268 Road, Doig Road to the Osborn River, Buekert Avenue, McTavish Trail, PDR Osborn ACC and Osborn Dump Road, were evacuated.

There are currently multiple wildfires infringing on the area including the Voight Creek fire, which is South of Cecil Lake Road, 30 kilometres East of Fort St. John.

This fire was discovered on Saturday, and as of Sunday night was 31 hectares in size and 85 per cent contained.

The Peace River Regional District issued an Evacuation Alert for the Goodlow area as of 5 p.m., Sunday, May 1.

This includes the 244 Road, from the Alces River west to 223 Road, 223 Road, between 244 Road and Cecil Lake Road, 221 Road between Cecil Lake Road and just north of the 252 Road, 221 Road, off of the 224 Road, 250 Road and 252 Road, off of 221 Road, 217 Road, between 244 Road and just north of the Cecil Lake Road, Cecil Lake Road, between 2895 Cecil Lake Road and the Alces River, 219 Road off of Cecil Lake Road.

The Clearview fire, last updated at about 9 p.m. on Sunday night, is located South of Cecil Lake Road, also 30 km East of Fort St. John.

This fire was also discovered on Saturday and is now 48 hectares in size.

The fire is 75 per cent contained and the cause is still under investigation.

At last count there were 17 firefighters and one helicopter working against it.

Two fires are also nearing the Doig River First Nations community.

The Siphon Creek fire was only four km South of the First Nation as of 7:45 p.m. on Sunday night.

The fire is a whopping 4,000 hectares in size and is not yet contained at all.

The Peace River Regional District issued an Evacuation Alert for the Siphon Creek area as of 6:30 p.m., Sunday, May 1.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

According to BC Wildfire Service, it is currently unsafe for ground crews to be working on this incident. Because of this, the wildfire is being monitored from the air, with a focus on public safety.

A second fire, called the Doig River fire, is only two km North of the First Nation. This fire is only 100 km in size, but it is also not contained at all.

Helicopters and ground crews worked on this fire Saturday and suppression efforts are continuing.

A fire that caused evacuations last week has revved up once again.

The Beaton Airport Road fire is now 50 km North West of Fort St. John.

It is currently 7,035 hectares in size and 85 per cent contained.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, warm weather and windy conditions on Saturday increased the fire activity on the Beaton Airport Road fire.

However, crews were able to successfully hold the wildfire within the established containment lines.

On Sunday, crews made progress along the perimeter of the fire, and helicopters were bucketing water on active hot spots.

On Sunday, there were 81 firefighters and working on the fire.

An Incident Management Team and BC Hydro are also assigned this incident.
