Musical instrument lending library opens in Vancouver

A new library has popped up in B.C., but instead of borrowing books, you can borrow instruments.

The Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library his now open in Vancouver and it’s all part of a national initiative.

The hope is that other cities across Canada will open musical lending libraries to help individuals strengthen their love for music.

"Music is such an important form of cultural and artistic expression - we're delighted to be part of supporting the creativity of Vancouver residents by making musical instruments more accessible," said Sandra Singh, Chief Librarian, Vancouver Public Library.

"Thanks to the generosity of Sun Life, we're able to open more doors for Vancouverites to play and experience music - and in doing so, connect more people to the love of music. It's exciting to imagine all the music that will be created thanks to the Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library."

Sun Life Financial and the Vancouver Public Library announced their partnership on Tuesday, which has helped open the lending library. The financial institution also donated $130,000 and 100 instruments for the library.

For the next month, those in the Vancouver area can donate new or gently used musical instruments to the new initiative.

Those interested in borrowing the instruments can head down to the central library downtown. All someone needs is a valid Vancouver public library card if they'd like to borrow an instrument.
